Homeless runaway? Backstage intruder? Daredevil gymnast? Rock guitar virtuoso, playing to tens of thousands of fans?

Nils Lofgren has been there, done that – and more.

Lofgren – who was struck by creative lightning at a Jimi Hendrix concert, plucked from relative obscurity as a tenacious teen by Neil Young, and went on to go guitar-to-guitar with Bruce Springsteen – shared some of his eye-popping past, and his heart-wrenching present, in a freewheeling interview with The Associated Press.

His new mission: Unleashing the “therapeutic” joy and energy of music as he soldiers through U.S. tour dates while gripped with grief.

Lofgren was performing in England when his dear friend and E Street Band mate Clarence Clemons suffered a stroke. He intended to fly to Florida and “sit with Clarence as he recovered.”

It was not to be. Read more…

JASCHA HEIFETZ: GODS FIDDLER A Film by Peter Rosen (Kultur DVD)

Its been a good few months for Jascha Heifetz fans. Sony has released a 103-CD collection certified by Guinness World Records as the largest box set ever devoted to a single classical player (affordably priced at less than $3 per disc). And Peter Rosen has made a feature-length documentary film, to be released on DVD this month, about the wunderkind of wunderkinds from Vilna who for many still represents the apex of violin perfection.

From the movies title alone, it sounds like a standard-issue classical music hagiography – but this film is more interesting than that. Of course, there are the requisite interviews with famous violinists searching for superlatives to describe the thrill of his playing, and old anecdotes are dusted off to bring color to the story of his phenomenal rise.

Fans of Japanese pop group AKB48 have been shocked by news that the latest member of the group is not a real person but a computer-generated avatar.

The band, which recently performed at a benefit show with Lady Gaga, was joined by a new singer called Aimi Eguchi earlier this year, but it has now been revealed she is in fact a digital composition of features from six of the other members, and her voice is that of an actor.

Fans reportedly became suspicious of her similarities to her bandmates when she was chosen to front an advertising campaign alongside some of the more high-profile members of the group, while some also noticed her given birthday coincided with the launch of the candy company she was promoting, Ezaki Glico, according to Sky News.

The hoax was revealed this week when a video was posted online showing how computer wizards used high-tech graphics to create the digital girl, using computer images of the other singers’ features which were merged to create the ‘perfect’ group member.
